Claims Special Investigator

The Special Investigator will support the SIU operation by investigating suspicious claims, conducting background and investigative research, compiling reports, and communicating with internal and external customers.  The Special Investigator may also participate in developing and delivering training on anti-fraud and other property claim topics.

Essential Duties

  • Complete recorded and detailed interviews of pertinent individuals during the course of an investigation in a professional manner
  • Conduct scene investigations, under a variety of conditions.
  • Be available for extended CAT deployment
  • Complete neighborhood canvasses
  • Make sound judgments during the investigation.
  • Provide timely progress updates and submit claim updates as required.
  • Complete detailed investigative reports.
  • Ability to conduct multiple types of complex claims investigations
  • Conduct research and obtain courthouse, property, financial and criminal information
  • Handle confidential information during an investigation and maintain access eligibility
  • Coordinate investigations and provide direction to internal personnel
  • Establish and maintain liaison with other SIU, Law Enforcement, and related professional organizations
  • Effectively communicate with expert witnesses
  • Ability to testify in court proceedings regarding work product
  • Provides expertise and support to all operations and functions within the company
  • Responsible for policy interpretations as it relates to anti-fraud concepts
  • Performs special projects as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills required
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Outlook and have a working knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint
  • College degree is strongly preferred, but not required
  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation
  • Maintain valid government issued state driver’s license

  • Strong interpersonal skills and be open to feedback
  • Ability to work effectively under stress and potential confrontational situations

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

BS/BA in business or related field required. MBA and/or Insurances Designations, such as AIC, CPCU, SCLA or fraud designations such as CIFI or CFE are a plus.

Must have at least five (5) years of investigative or claims experience, as well as experience in the areas of coverage, investigation, evaluations, negotiation, and other resolution techniques. Must model ethics and integrity.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
